MREs (Meal, Ready to Eat) are self-contained meal kits of food chock full of vitamins, minerals, and caloric fortitude to keep energy and strength up. Although originally designed for soldiers in the field, many civilians are now opting to purchase these for themselves to stock their family’s emergency supplies.

Each individual MRE meal kit contains approximately 1200 calories and 1/3 of the military’s recommended amount of vitamins and minerals. It is important to note that the average citizen will not require the suggested 3 MRE meals a day to keep them sustained, particularly if they are not burning excessive calories. Depending on storage temperatures, the average shelf life for an MRE is 11 years.

Although everything in an MRE pack can be eaten cold and right out of the individual pouches, it is highly recommended to take advantage of the flameless ration heater, as it enhances the flavor of the food. All that is required to heat your MRE is a small amount of water. This causes an environmentally friendly chemical reaction inside the pouch, causing the temperature of the water to rise rapidly, heating the food in 12 minutes.

The menu for military personnel has given a new meaning to revision. The Military MRE Menu 2011 is a combination of good nutrition and selective food choices. For many years now the military has provided emergency food rations, for its fighting men and women. The foods they provide are called MRE, or meals ready to eat. The MRE is not only for military use it is also distributed to civilians in time of natural disasters.

These meals originally came in plain brown boxes, and food choices were limited. Taste was also an issue as well. After numerous complaints from soldiers military scientists decided to beef up their act and create better tasting foods in newly designed packages. The new bag designs came into play in 2008 along with the MRE XXVI.

In 1987 the MRE menu consisted of only twelve food items. As the years progressed the number of food items increased as well. Currently the numbers of food items in the Military MRE Menu 2011 are (24). While some of the food items are the same, there have been some additions, as well as some improvements. The military prides itself on healthy, and well balanced meals, for their working men and women. The menu changes as often as the military deem fit, they must constantly keep up with the needs, and demands of it soldiers.

The basic menu consists of a combination of meats, pasta, and vegetables. With the new and improved menu; some new food items have been added, and some previous food items have been removed. The menu of the new Military MRE Menu 2011 is as follows:

The main new additions in the 2011 Military menu are the; Lemon Pepper Tuna, Ratatouille, Pork Sausage w/ Gravy. There has also been some food revision in the snacks, dessert, and condiment selection as well. The deleted food items from the 2010 menu are the; Veggie Burger w/ BBQ Sauce, Sloppy Joe, and the Plain tuna. The Military MRE Menu 2011 currently has 24 menus, and four accessories menu that will be readily available soon.

The menu of military MRE is constantly changing as the U.S. government adapts to new menu ideas, soldiers’ tastes and advancements in nutritional components. Gone are the days of serviceable but bland food. While some old American favorites still remain, the menu has been expanded to include flavorings from other cultures. Accommodations have also been made to the vegetarian lifestyle with vegan entrees. With these improvements and variety, there is something for everybody with MRE meals ready to eat.

Military MREs are subject to stricter requirements than civilian MREs. This is because these food rations are for operational and field use. For highly active individuals, MREs must meet their nutritional needs. Each military MRE is one self contained individual meal package which has about 1200 calories. Each MRE case has twelve different meals so that provides the service members some variety which in turn encourages that proper nutritional needs are met. Beyond nutritional requirements, military MREs meals are regulated for proper packaging. This is to make sure that the MRE meal contents won’t be spoiled with variable temperatures from high altitude drops or scorching desert temperatures. Therefore, the shelf life of MREs varies according to their storage conditions. In ideal conditions, MREs are said to be good for as long as eleven years. In high heat temperatures hitting 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees the expected shelf life is nine months. For what is considered normal conditions, the shelf life is three and a half years at 81 degrees Fahrenheit or 27 degrees Celcius.

MREs have often been compared with freeze dried food as well since it is used by the government to provide for service members as well along with the disaster relief efforts. Freeze dried food pouches and cans do have the advantage of having longer shelf life than MRE meals. With the Mountain House freeze dried food, they purport to last up to 25 years in the right storage conditions. Freeze dried food is easy to consume as well. All you have to do is add water and it comes out tasting very much like the original menu. You can also find pretty extensive menus for Mountain House freeze dried food. When Hurricane Katrina hit, the prices of MRE meals skyrocketed because the food supply chain just wasn’t getting to those in need. People took matters into their own hands by being proactive and stock piled military MREs in case of emergencies. Nowadays, more manufacturers offer commercial MREs or civilian meals ready to eat. It is understandable that people might still want military grade food rations as the thinking is, if it is good enough for the army, it is good enough for me. However, studying the packages, you will find that there is actually very little few differences between civilian MREs and military MREs. In some instances, you might be getting better quality food with civilian MREs.

U.S. military MREs are actually not supposed to be sold for commercial purposes. However, this doesn’t stop sales of cases of MRE on eBay. If you have no problem with buying military MRE, things you want to look out for are the packing and inspection date and the menu offered. You also have to be aware that since this sale is prohibited by the U.S. government, you’ll have little recourse in legal actions should you find something wrong with your MRE. In other words, buyer beware. Since the military MRE comes to you second hand, you also do not have any idea how it was stored and what temperature conditions it was subjected to. On the other hand, if you do get your hands on a case of genuine military MRE, it is a bigger meal than the civilian version and there’s more variety in the case as well. Military MREs are also less expensive than civilian MREs.

The manufacturers of civilian meals ready to eat are listening to the public demands for more variety in the menus. Each year, a greater selection emerges. There are five main brands of civilian food rations and they include: Ameriqual aPack, Sopakco Sure-Pak 12, Wornick Eversafe, Menu C, MREStar. The packaging and contents of these companies are quite similar to the military version as the first three companies listed actually produce MREs for the military. If you are buying civilian MREs, the chances are it won’t be left in the scorching desert sun and will be “fresher” when you get it. You can then properly store it for your own emergency preparation without worries if it will go bad.
